Custom domains and default pages domains - are they mutually exclusive?

As per the title, is it possible to have both? Having set up our server for custom domains by installing a second NIC in the server to which to do the DNS chaining (the other NIC is doing wildcard default domains), default pages now get a 404 error. I cannot find any documentation regarding this. Must we have either default Pages domains OR custom domains, not both ?
