Issue Board Compact View
Problem to solve
Users with relatively large numbers of issues and labels on a board may have difficulty seeing a balanced overview of the board without needing to zoom out. This is especially pertinent for users who do not have access to the GitLab Ultimate planning features that help with getting a bird's eye view of progress (e.g. Roadmap).
Further details
Recently I spoke with users regarding a proposal to add images to the issue board view (ux-research#107 (closed)). Two users distinctly disagreed with this proposal and stressed the fact that they are in need of ways to get a better overview of the issues in their projects. They both felt that images would clutter the board and hinder their ability to see an overview of all the issues. Note that both of these users are relying heavily on issue boards for project management capabilities due to the fact that they are not using GitLab Ultimate. They frequently use they board view and have relatively large numbers of issues in multiple projects.
Proposal
One user provided a possible solution:
- He is interested in a compact view of boards (at 21m1s in video) so that he can have a better overview without things like milestones and labels distracting him.
- Thinks that the flow of the tickets works well but the overview is limited without ultimate features (at 21m17s in video).
- Says he needs a “170 inch screen in order to see everything” (at 41m33s in video).
- Created this mockup: https://userstyles.org/styles/166147/gitlab-compact-board
- “After our chat, i saw how much i needed a compact board version, so i made it via the google chrome extension user styles”
- Note: User 6 is aware of Issue Board Focus Mode but wants an even more compact view.
What does success look like, and how can we measure that?
Users have the option to see a better overview of their issue boards, enabling them to better track issues and groom their backlogs.
