Improved email on user registration

Problem to solve

When a user registers for GitLab, we send them one email when email confirmation is enabled on the instance:

When Confirm your account is clicked, it redirects to the login page with a "Your email address has been confirmed. Please sign in." message.

Proposal

  • We should improve the email that we send to a new user.
    • Welcome the user to GitLab. Tell them about our value as a product, including the scope of the application.
  • On confirming their email address, the user should be logged into the application (not presented with sign-in screen).

If email confirmation is off, we should still send a welcome email.

What does success look like, and how can we measure that?

  • 10% improvement in new user conversion from registration to login.
