PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE find a more HUMANE WAY to establish humanity than ReCAPTCHA
ReCAPTCHA has become the bain of the Internet. Everytime I have to prove that I'm a human, I have to spend 10 minutes pixel hunting, squinting and clicking at pictures. If it was one, two or three screens of puzzles it wouldn't be a problem but there are usually 10 to 20 screens (depending on how many times you missed a sidewalk crossing over into the adjacent square!). There is absolutely no reason to have that many test screens because if an image recognition software can beat one screen, it can beat the 20 tests. In fact, I would argue that such an AI would be vastly superior at beating these puzzles than a human. The only thing that it accomplishes is to antagonize real human beings and make our usage of site such as your an utter and miserable drudgery.
Furthermore, I am visually challenged. I don't see very well. I have to have the fonts jacked up high and I tend use TTS rather read the text. You know what reCAPTCHA does when I hit the audio option?? It gives me this error:
Your computer or network may be sending automated queries. To protect our users, we can't process your request right now. For more details visit our help page
Every single time. At no point did it actually give me a challenge based on audio. It's not just on your site and not just on this PC. Beyond having an intensely badly designed product, this company is actively discriminating against visually impaired users. I'm sincerely hoping that as a website devoted to free and open source software and community building, gitlab does not support such discriminatory practices.
Suggestions:
- An actual audio test for the visually impaired or challenged
- Squigl-Pix
- Esp-Pix
- If we're using Google Accounts/social media to log in, is there a way to establish how old the account is? A 6 year old account is not going to be used by a spammer.
