Find docs that are not meant to be maintained (blogs/articles)
Problem to solve
From reviewing !42158 (merged), it looked suspiciously "bloggy", and the kind of thing we wouldn't normally have in the docs. The TW team shouldn't be responsible for keeping tutorials up to date for non-GitLab products, and this kind of article should be hosted as a blog post, which we can link to if needed, but to the reader it's clear that it was correct "at the time of writing", and can still be useful/educational, but is not actively being updated.
It seems a lot of these were originally added to doc/articles
: https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab-foss/-/blob/b3fa033d883d291e3b5ad25ba8e564d856e329b1/doc/articles/index.md. Since then, some were moved to doc/topics
, others were moved to doc/ci/examples
... I haven't been able to track everything yet, there could be more kicking around.
These were commissioned and written (and paid for, I believe) through the Community Writers program (no longer existing).
A good example is: gitlab-com/community-writers#5 (closed)
If you check the community writer's project at https://gitlab.com/gitlab-com/community-writers, you can see clearly that it says: This project is the issue tracker for proposals of blog posts for the GitLab blog to be written by community writers.
The key words are: blog posts. So these docs were intended to be blogs... written, published, and then allowed to go stale.
But, once written, some of these were moved into the main docs project. For example: gitlab-foss!13255 (merged), while others did in fact go to about.gitlab.com.
Proposal
We should consider moving the blog posts/articles to about.gitlab.com, and simply linking to them from appropriate pages. Alternatively, we could move them to another place in the docs suite and make it clear they are not actively being maintained?
History
It seems the decision to move technical blog posts into the docs site was made here: https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab-docs/-/issues/92
The community writer's program was shut down here: gitlab-com/www-gitlab-com!51389 (merged)
A key line in the license for the community writer's program: gitlab-com/www-gitlab-com!8232 (diffs)
