First time user experience of epic boards MVC

Problem to solve

When facilitating planning at scale across many teams or groups within my organization, I want a high level view of how my epics are moving through a workflow, so that I can track and report on the progress of features and initiatives.

First use: How might we guide the user in setting up their first epic board?

User experience goal

Users are able to set up their first epic board even if they have no epics attached. They have basic guidance around recommended lists to start with as well as board naming conventions.

Future scope: Improve education and guidance with the support of the Growth team post MVC.

Proposal

MVC (consistent with current experience) Future scope (perhaps doable if issue boards adopts)

MVC

  • Consistent with current issue board first use experience
  • Default lists are Open and 'Closed`
  • Recommend a To do and Doing list as defaults that can be applied to board in one click
  • Default board name is Planning

Future scope

  • Everything in MVC, but just applying the To do and Doing columns on first use. This is being discussed as an option within Issue Boards so we can either implement it now or work to make both experiences consistent after more validation,

Availability & Testing

What does success look like, and how can we measure that?

Users are creating epic boards that include epics, lists, and we see consistent usage of these.
