"Allow users to request access" for private project
Problem to solve
We wish to retain relatively tight control over project permissions but still want users to be able to find the projects they are looking for.
Due to our setup, self-hosting on an internal network where anyone in the company can log in, we have found that there is little to no real difference between a public and an internal project (assuming no additional settings are modified). As such we really only want users to have private projects. We have accomplished this by restricting the visibility levels.
Unfortunately, there is no option to "Allow users to request access" under private permissions. This forces us to instead elevate projects to at least internal permissions, change all of the project feature access to members only, and trust project owners/maintainers to not mess with these settings (a risky and hard thing to ask sys admins to cede control over).
Intended users
- Project owners
- Sidney (Systems Administrator)
User experience goal
Keep intellectual property locked down with strong restrictions to visibility and access but still allow users to find their collaboration projects and request access.
Proposal
Allow project owners/maintainers of a private project to enable "Allow users to request access".
