Is the Help page the right place to notify about updates and config information?
Overview
The Help page in both .com and self-managed instances shows the version of GitLab and prompts to upgrade when a version falls behind latest. It also links to configuration details for the instance.
Problem
For .com users, they have no control over the version that is running. It doesn't seem like it should be the most prominent information to display for a user in the Help page. Even for self-managed instances, this information displays at the top of the help page for non-Admin users that have no control over the version and configuration.
Questions to address
- Are non-Admin users interested in seeing the version of GitLab they are on? Probably, so they know if they will have access to features that came out in a specific release
- Are non-Admin users interested in seeing if an update is available and how critical it is that the instance gets updated (the color coded warnings about upgrades)?
- Do non-Admin users need to access the configuration details that are linked in that section?
- Is it the most important thing they want to see at the top of the Help page? Probably not.
- Should we move this whole section to the Admin section? I think there is still some value in displaying the version number for non admin users, but could we move the update warnings and config details?
- Are the needs of non-Admin users any different for .com versus self-managed users?
