Scalable design for multiple avatars

In GitLab, we have many places where we display multiple avatars:

• Issue / mr sidebars.
• Board cards.
• Leaving comments in code diffs / image diffs.

Our design is slightly different in each case.

I noticed this I think new design in Google docs. I like it since it's pretty much scalable for all scenarios. Would we consider this?
