Integrate with Open Collective products and services

Everyone can contribute. Help move this issue forward while earning points, leveling up and collecting rewards.

As part of making GitLab more valuable for open source orgs and projects, we need to keep sustainability in mind. GitHub has created the GitHub sponsors program to make it easier for open source projects and communities to raise funds, and it would be great for GitLab to also consider ways that it can contribute to the sustainability of open source organizations that are using GitLab.

Open Collective is an organization that helps open source projects and communities raise funds, and it currently has a lot of integration with GitHub. Open Collective helps communities and projects that don't have their own bank account apply for a Collective so that they can raise funds; however, in order to apply, they need to either verify their project's status with GitHub or manually (see website). It would be great if they could also verify with GitLab.

I spoke with @piamancini and @alyssapwright to learn more about ways that we could integrate with some of their products and services to provide more value for our open source community. It may be nice to pursue some of the low-hanging fruit in the short-term as we continue to think about the role GitLab can play within th open source sustainability space.

Low hanging fruit to consider implementing

Add GitLab authentication on Open Collective

"You're creating software. You don't want to worry about creating a legal entity or separate bank account, paying taxes, or providing invoices to sponsors. Let us take care of all that, so you can stay focused on your project."

  • In order for users to sign up for a collective, they need to have their project verified. Right now, there's an option to do that manually, or with their GitHub ID.
  • ACTION: We should enable verification with GitLab

Integrate with BackYourStack

Open Collective has created a website called Back Your Stack to allow organizations to scan their technology and see what their open source dependencies are so that they can then help fund them.

  • ACTION: We should enable scanning available with GitLab
