Use axios mock adapter where request object is needed

Because of https://github.com/ctimmerm/axios-mock-adapter/issues/104 we cannot use the axios mock adapter for testing application code that depends on response.request. To avoid more inconsistency in our tests, we should either find a workaround or contribute upstream to fix this.
