German Translation: don't translate technical terms

Description

With the newest Gitlab release the UI is finally translated to German (and probably other languages). But not only are the UI elements translated, also common technical terms are translated:

  • Fork is translated to Ableger
  • Readme is translated to Lies mich
  • Changelog is translated to Änderungsliste
  • Merge Eventsis translated to Ereignisse zusammenführen
  • Push Events is translated to Übertragungsereignisse
  • Issue Events is translated to Ticketereignisse

This list is certainly not complete, but these are the translations I noticed so far, I will add more examples as I discover more translations.

These translations might be the correct translation to german, but for a native german speaker these translations sound weird because words like fork, readme, changelog, merge, push, issue, etc are well known by developers and/or git users and in their daily business they also use the native english words instead of a translation to their native language.

Proposal

Because of the reasons mentioned above I propose to

  1. Maintain a list of terms that should be not translated in the UI, especially terms from the git workflow, but also other technical terms
  2. Keep these words as the are in the UI and do not translate them to the users language

An incomplete list of terms not to translate might be:

  • fork
  • readme
  • changelog
  • merge
  • push
  • issue

Use cases

This feature is for all users that use gitlab with a different UI language than english. The benefit is that using gitlab feels more natural for the user as the UI uses the same terms as the user uses in his daily business and already knows from the git workflow.

Feature checklist

Make sure these are completed before closing the issue, with a link to the relevant commit.

  • List of technical terms that should not be translated is created and maintained
  • Translation of the UI doesnt include terms in the list above
