Incremental Backups

Everyone can contribute. Help move this issue forward while earning points, leveling up and collecting rewards.

Description

As our backups grow and the length of time to take a backup increases it would be nice to provide some other type of backup option. Ie. Incremental Backup.

So my thoughts are Full backup 1 once a day. Incremental X many times a day.

Use cases

This would be used for pivotal cloud foundry customers. The use case would be as follows:

  1. Full Backup consumes system resources and takes a long time to execute. Sometimes causing system to be unusable. If we are only performing one backup a day the last restore point could possibly be 23:59 minutes ago. To me this is bad customer service to my end users.

If I could run x many incremental backups during the day and one full system backup once a day this would be very useful. It would provide a more recent point to restore too and not cause my Gitlab instance to become unavailable during backup.
