Description

To increase adoption of our tools, we should consider focussing on a subset of frameworks and making GitLab work super amazingly for those.

This means that we:

  1. Recognise these types of projects
  2. Set up everything (idea to monitoring) automatically for these projects
  3. For steps that require manual intervention, we create a typical onboarding wizard (with steps highlighting where you are)

We should consider setting up a K8S instance (a cluster for each project through GKE API?) for these users on GitLab.com and just deploying their apps there. This would greatly help us with battle-testing and will bring these powers to everyone.

For a first iteration we could:

  1. Only support Rails or Node projects
  2. Only support PG databases
  3. Only allow Gold subscribers to do this or only GitLab employees
  4. Limit the resources for each cluster

Proposal

Discuss this and actually ship something.

Documentation blurb

(Write the start of the documentation of this feature here, include:

  1. Why should someone use it; what's the underlying problem.
  2. What is the solution.
  3. How does someone use this

During implementation, this can then be copied and used as a starter for the documentation.)
