Project custom file templates
Description
Currently, we use templates for issues, merge requests and specific files like .gitignore
, .gitlab-ci.yml
etc. Can we provide an option for the user to create custom templates that they can use while creating new files using GitLab Web Editor.
Proposal
Use the .gitlab
folder for providing template files, preferably based on extensions. That is, when creating/editing a markdown (extension md) file, a dropdown is shown in the Web Editor that lets the user pick an entry from the files inside .gitlab/templates/md
folder.
Usecase
Can't think of a general use case. A FOSS community I am volunteering for wishes to use GitLab Pages with Jekyll for their blogs. It would be useful for them if they can provide templates (specify the fields required) for blog posts' YAML front matter, that a person writing the blog post can reuse (fill in the values).
This can also be used by software development teams where they need the source code files to have a specific format - for example, all .py
files should have a shebang line and should be under GPL-3.0+ license
copyrighted to the organization etc.
