Set Default of GitLab CE Issue Board to Sort by Most Popular

Description

The number of GitLab’s issues continually go up and based on the number of issues currently open (currently over 5,000), it becomes difficult to review. At the rate that issues are completed or solved, this number will only increase. This leads to a sense that if you contribute and create a great issue, there are so many other issues that it’s not likely that your issue will be solved.

Proposal

Seeing as GitLab values their community and seeks developer input to drive the product, there needs to be a new method to gauge interest and consensus across a community. A minimally viable change is to set the default sorting option for listings as “Most Popular”.

My hypothesis is that this will:

  • incentivize the writer of an issue to get other contributors on board
  • get contributors to read other people’s issues
  • improve how GitLab gets input from their community
  • "democratize" issues
