What can the pipeline and build IDs be used for? (And why do we show them?)

I was wondering about this for quite some time now. What is the point of showing a build or pipeline ID? It is shown so many places, but I simply can't figure out why one would be interested in knowing it. To me, it is just a long random number without any meaning in daily use 😕

It adds a lot of clutter to the pipeline overview and leads to the branch name being displayed incompletely: pipelineid

The build ID even has its own column in a list of builds/jobs, using a lot of space: buildlist

Unless there is a very good reason for keeping the build and pipeline IDs in the UI, I would suggest removing them from all overview pages, lists, and alike.

Related to gitlab-ce#22006 (which proposes to add the ID to even more pages)
