LDAP authN and cloning a repo doesn't work

It's the same one I'm having with GitLab CE.

If I clone a repo using my LDAP credentials, it fails.

I am running the latest version of GitLab 8.8.

With this issue, I have to disable LDAP authN to get cloning working again for local GitLab authN.

How can I troubleshoot this? What info do you need? I am NOT using Active Directory, but instead a unix ldap directory.
