No Markdown (GFM) in commit messages

Hey, according to markdown.md you should be able to use GFM in commit messages. We don't seem to be getting any, except for emojis (I tried bold, italics and links). The commit messages just sit unprocessed.

This is the case on 7.10.0. As far as I know this has never worked (in ~12 months or so), and I think I remember a time when even emojis didn't work, but I can't be sure and don't have version numbers at all.
