Version check doesnt handle none git installations

We are packaging git as rpm ourself for opensuse.

In the help screen we get: "GitLab 7.10.0.pre fatal: Not a git repository (or any of the parent directories): .git"

Is there any file we can provide which can hold the git revision for this?
