$purple- swatches only exist in the pattern library
Current state
There is a set of $purple-
swatches in the Sketch pattern library, but they do not exist in the Pajamas documentation.
Proposed state
- Option A: Add
$purple-
swatches to Pajamas as another chromatic palette. - Option B: Remove
$purple-
swatches from Sketch pattern library.
Request
I’d like to propose option A for the following reasons:
- Purple is one of the brand colors, and having the swatches would allow more of the UI to take on the brand.
- We’re building out an accessible color palette for data visualization and the purple set would be very helpful as it can contrast well with other swatches. If you view the attached video, you can see that purple also has a higher range of swatches that satisfy a 4.5:1 contrast ratio on white.
- The existing Indigo theme is relatively muted, and does not have the same vibrance and depth of the purple set.
- A vibrant purple to orange palette is common in data vis, and there’s plenty of research backing up its value for different types of color blindness.
- ColorBrewer has a great example of a similar palette
- Data Color Picker default palette
- Color Use Guidelines for Mapping and Visualization
- The viridis color palettes (see magma, plasma, and inferno palettes)
- Picking a colour scale for scientific graphics
Considerations
- Other chromatic palettes have interactive meaning associated with them. e.g., Blue indicates a current or active state. It communicates: management, progress, connectivity, or organization. Purple would have brand connotations, but not necessarily interactive ones, so we’d need to consider how to document use (likely only around brand and data vis).
- A data visualization palette pulls swatches from all other palettes, in this use swatches do not have associated meaning, they only represent data points.
- The purple palette has not gone through an accessibility review.
