Labels: Reduce visual impact of labels
Background
Labels consist of a large, solid color — or in the case of scoped labels, partially solid — block, which can appear in multiples together. This results in large and very colorful groupings of elements that can appear many times over in contexts such as boards and lists.
Proposal
Vibrancy reduction
Draft: Experiment: Update labels design in dark... (gitlab-org/gitlab!204520) addresses this challenge by reducing vibrancy in dark mode, aligned to the overall color strategy in dark mode.
For light mode, we could consider taking a similar approach, retaining the "true" color in the outline while reducing the impact of the background.
Redesign
Previous explorations have focused on redesigning labels to minimize the amount of color used. One proposal was to reduce label color to outline, or outline + color component
