Quarterly review and update of the runner container images support lifecycle [FY26 Q2]

Overview

  1. Review and update as needed the content in the container images and end of publishing date table

  • A few specific areas to note:

    • The current EOL dates were aligned with the GitLab release schedule where releases fell on the 22nd of each month. Therefore - should we adjust future EOL dates to align with the new release schedule?
    • The Red Hat UBI image 8 entry needs to be revised as the listed version is EOL.
    • Review Ubuntu's release cycle and determine if we need to update Runner core.
    • Consider removing Alpine entries that are now EOL per the GitLab EOL date column.
  1. Create issues, as needed, to add support for new versions of base container images after validating the currently available releases from Ubuntu, Red Hat, Alpine, Microsoft.
