GitLab Runner for Apple Silicon M1

Release notes

Generally available in GitLab 14.8 is a native GitLab Runner for the Apple M1 chip. You can now install and run GitLab Runner on Apple M1-powered hardware and take advantage of the improved performance and optimization of the M1 ARM processor. To download and install GitLab Runner for Apple M1, run the following command:

sudo curl --output /usr/local/bin/gitlab-runner "https://gitlab-runner-downloads.s3.amazonaws.com/latest/binaries/gitlab-runner-darwin-arm64"

Description

GitLab Runner does not contain an Apple Silicon (ARM64) binary slice, meaning all our C++ unit test executables are run under the Apple Rosetta 2 emulator. This makes it impossible to run our unit tests on updated ARM-specific code using the Developer Transition Kit with GitLab CI.

Proposal

Build and publish a native GitLab Runner for Apple M1 ARM-powered Macs.
