Revamp first page of the EE and CE docs

Docs experience for first-time users https://docs.gitlab.com/ee/README.html https://docs.gitlab.com/ce/README.html

Problem

It’s unwieldy and not friendly to a new reader: Lots of information, hard to browse.

Needs to offer a clear picture of the product offering.

Solution

  • Update the single page in place; no additional subpages
  • Give every area a short description
  • Section specific items
    • Rethink/minimize/move most valuable pages sec.
    • Basics:
      • Improve gitlab-basics; everything in there belongs somewhere else whether /git, /project, etc.
      • Actual GitLab Basics should be getting started items
  • Clear summary of each section (eg Plan) with key feature links
  • Some additional design ideas here https://gitlab.com/gitlab-com/gitlab-docs/issues/48
  • Readable sitemap - for our own inventory, then to publish (so it's ctrl-f-able)
  • Track analytics before and after to gauge impact: Perhaps time on page and bounces, both of which should drop. Post Google Analytics links here.
