Link button in markdown editor should recognize URLs

The newly implemented link button in the markdown editor does not recognize when URLs is selected

As suggested in !18579 (merged)
On GitHub when you type and select an URL and press the
linkbutton it is recognized as a URL and put in between the parentheses and not in the brackets.
This suggestion didn't make in that MR, both @iamphill suggested to create a new issue for it.
