git clone fatal: unable to access https

After upgrading to the latest GitLab release (9.4.2) cloning via HTTPS seems to be broken, cloning via SSH still works. When I want to try to clone a repo - or push to it - the following error message appears in my git cli client:

fatal: unable to access 'https://gitlab.loc/group/repo.git/': The requested URL returned error: 500
