Embed Salesforce details in issue

We are thinking about adding an embedding concept to issues, which can provide various methods of integration with third party services. One service that has good potential for this model, is SFDC.

We could:

  • Autodetect the SFDC links in comments, and then embed a small TLDR summary of the customer directly in the comment so users do not have to log in to see the details (minimum permissions can be required)
  • By linking, we could also automatically update the SFDC record to append the issue to a list that the opportunity/customer is interested in.
  • We could then have an embed at the top of the issue, which could provide a small summary of the customers and perhaps seats, that are associated with that issue.

This would solve three key needs:

  1. Easily parsing the customer interested in an issue, saving PM's significant amount of time and increasing the chances of them actually consuming the information
  2. Automatically linking back the issue to the SFDC account, so a SSOT of issues they are interested in is maintained
  3. A summary table for each feature request, that could display to people with the right permissions what customers (and revenue) are interested in particular issues

There are some limitations:

  • It would be difficult to run reports on this data from within GitLab, as it would probably not be a field you could easily search on
