WIP: Set up a competitive analysis for docs
Based on discussion in the Global Nav issue, we want to set up a "competitive analysis" for documentation.
We'll base this analysis on a number of questions and hypotheses, many of which are TBD at this time.
Questions:
- Do we want all docs available in a single sidebar nav (thus the "Global Nav" issue)
- What competitors doc in different operating systems (Linux, MacOS, Windows; versions)
- What do competitors do w/r/t:
- "Getting Started" Guides
- Use cases
- Feedback
(Maybe we should base this more on our FY 20 vision?)
Hypotheses:
- Navbar options beyond two levels are at best, confusing.
- A serious proportion of our readers deploy on Linux (Do we have search data, e.g. Algolia)
Competitive Analysis Model:
Per discussion with @beckalippert , models:
- https://app.mural.co/t/gitlab2474/m/gitlab2474/1568067253607/b757e3cbc8eaa7ea9312f7b992c98b0df36dcf4a
Matrix: Competitors, Heuristics (success criteria) as axes, with scores, possibly screenshots in each box, possibly color coded (1-5 score; 1-2 = red, 3 = yellow, 4-5 = green)
Based on this info, I'd set up a matrix, with
Measures on the vertical axis (OS coverage, Getting Started Guides, Use Cases, Feedback Mechanisms, Navbar depth) Us and competitors on the horizontal axis (GitLab, GitHub, Algolia, Docker, Azure), possibly color coded, links to screenshots
