Replace /ee/ URL prefix with something else
From the discussion in #1070 (comment 666715290), now that we have Pages support for wildcard redirects, we can finally get rid of /ee/
in the docs URL. It's confusing to our users and they are left wondering where they can find the CE docs.
Possible alternatives
- Replace
/ee/
with something else:https://docs.gitlab.com/content/
https://docs.gitlab.com/application/
https://docs.gitlab.com/app/
https://docs.gitlab.com/product/
https://docs.gitlab.com/productdoc/
- Drop
/ee/
completely:-
https://docs.gitlab.com/
The only problem with this approach is that we have two index pages. The main index page at https://docs.gitlab.com/index.html, and the project
index.md
(which used to be the README.md), at: https://docs.gitlab.com/ee/index.html. On the main page, TheExplore all topics
link under the search bar links to this secondaryee/index.html
.If we publish into
/
, what do we do with the existingee/index.html
? Do we try to migrate the content from/ee/index.html
to/index.html
and remove/ee/index.html
? That would leave https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/tree/master/doc without an index page

Implementation details
I haven't tested but, to change the path we'd need to change one line in nanoc.yaml
. However, there are various places where /ee/
is hardcoded to the path of the docs:
- The navigation bar
- The
/help
redirect uses/ee/
in the path https://docs.gitlab.com/ee/user/admin_area/settings/help_page.html#destination-requirements - When you use the versions dropdown to hop from one version to another, the page you're on stays the same and only the version changes. If we omit
ee/
in master, but it stays in the online stable branches, I'm not sure how that will behave.
