Experience Recommendations - Secure FY20-Q3 - Security Dashboard

Overview

This is a follow up to part 1 of the experience baseline which audited the security dashboard. The recommendation is focused on the following:

Problem A Problem B Problem C
display_default display_default_wfilter table_display
Table view vulnerabilities are pushed down the page below the summary and large chart. The user needs to scroll up and down to adjust filters then view the table data. Example from a 1440x900px display (common laptop) When the user adjusts the severity filters, for example to "high" only, the summary view still displays “0” for the non-selected criticality levels (chart displays only the filtered object). This occupies space and displays non-relevant data. It’s unclear what time frame the table vulnerabilities are displaying (here is what it shows: recent security scan on default branch). Also, unclear what projects have or have not been tested and when.

Proposal for consideration and review

  • Layout changes that prioritize the table vulnerability data

    1. Header: Section header label ("Vulnerability Management") and filters
    2. Main: table data at the top making it immediately visible to the user
    3. Aside: contains the summary severity count and chart showing changes over time 0
  • Layout translated with styling 1

  • If the user filters by severity, the chart data summary shows only the selected data points 2

  • Additional considerations: this view leveraging sparklines to show changes over time, severity key labels same as the table, and an area for project scanning update data 4
