Storing research findings (UX research processes)
Related issues #21 (closed) and #23 (closed)
Splitting this out into it's own issue as per @pedroms suggestion:
Storing research findings
It's not easy to find issues related to UX research and it isn't always clear what I'm working on (unless I tell you in the UX weekly update!). Over time, this situation is going to get worse as we'll want to reference research that may have been done months ago. I don't want to be a 'gatekeeper' to research, you shouldn't have to go through me to find the research findings you need. I feel it would be useful to have a directory of research that people can browse and search. I'm proposing a separate project for UX Research. I have been apprehensive about this in the past, but since GitLab, as a product, is moving towards better cross-project collaboration, I think this could work.
Solution
UX research now has it's own project. Each issue represents a new research study.
Each research study will be categorised within the project's ReadMe.
Each issue will have appropriate labels related to the subject area (e.g. Navigation) and issue titles will be optimised to improve findability when searching.
Each issue will also have a label which represents the status of the issue. They are:
Backlog
In Progress
Done
Issues which are In Progress will be marked as confidential until the research is completed to avoid bias. Issues will be unmarked as confidential when the research is completed and the Done label is added.
New labels have been added to GitLab's CE/EE projects. They are:
UX research: backlog
UX research: in progress
UX research: done
If a UX designer thinks an issue within GitLab's CE or EE project is a good candidate for some research. They should add the UX research:backlog label. I will periodically review the backlog and schedule the relevant research.
When research commences on an issue within either GitLab's CE or EE project, I will add the UX research: in progress label.
When research finishes on an issue within either GitLab's CE or EE project, I will add the UX research: completed label. The UX research: completed label should also be applied to issues which are created as an outcome of research that has taken place.
