Demonstrate hierarchy or relationship of items without indenting [Tree🌲]

Challenge

We currently allow up to 5 levels of nesting for items like Epics. This allows the user to visualize the parent/child relationship of work items in list views like Epic trees, or chart views like Roadmaps.

We rely on indentation to display this nesting relationship. This is already verging on unusable in some areas such at the roadmap- yet we are being ask to add in more levels of nesting. How might we indicate nesting in a more usable way, perhaps outside of indenting?
