Feature usage for Manage in usage ping
Our usage data collects anonymized usage data about how instances are using GitLab. To summarize this information in a way that's useful for individual stages, we roll this information up into a SMAU (Stage Monthly Active Users) metric.
The definition for each stage can be found here.
For Manage, we simply count all active users on an instance as Manage SMAU if they've created a group or have added LDAP users. There are two problems with this:
- It's too simple. Manage has many other relevant features that aren't counted.
- It's overestimated. We shouldn't count all active users on the instance if a single group was created. Instead, we should look to users who are directly interacting with Manage-related features to understand their usage patterns.
- We're tracking the unique number of users who have interacted with Manage features.
- We're able to summarize this data in a Manage SMAU definition that encompasses all of Manage's features.
