Scaling up backups
I've noticed (from a support perspective) that backups may not scale well, especially once we get into the territory of several 100 gigabytes and moving on into terabytes.
I'd like to make sure that our backups best practices are documented and being shared with our customers.
What has been your experience with larger backups? Have you seen some of our larger customers implement alternative backup strategies? Do you have any ideas for what could be a good alternative to the rake backup task? I was thinking we could maybe do db dumps/backups and then use rysnc elsewhere. Others have mentioned that filesystem snapshots would work.
I see that we have some documentation for alternative backup strategies, but the content is minimal at best. There's also an open feature proposal for incremental backups, but I don't see much velocity there.
What do you think?
P.S. this started as a support-meta issue, so some of the content will seem focused in that direction.
