Add English (UK) to supported languages, and rename English to English (US)
Problem to solve
GitLab's English translation is currently "one size fits all", with the "size" being US English.
Target audience
Any English speaker who uses a non-US version of English.
Further details
Benefits:
- does not discriminate against non-US English speakers by forcing them to use GitLab with US spellings rather than their native spellings (for example, in English (UK), it's
cancelled
, notcanceled
). - does not assume that the "proper" version of English is US English. Many people in England would disagree with this
😁
Proposal
Rename the existing English language to English (US).
Add other English variants to https://translate.gitlab.com.
I'd be happy to do some of the translation work for English (UK) — most strings should not need changing, and those that do will generally just need spelling changes rather than complete rewording.
What does success look like, and how can we measure that?
Translations are available for non-US versions of English, and the US version is specifically marked as "English (US)" rather than just "English".
