Problems

In the existing issue board design, a list represents a label, and all the issues in that list contain that label.

There are some UX problems in the current visual design.

  1. In the board view, the label of a list is purposely not displayed in the issue entry of the list. This is confusing because we should reinforce our purposeful label-list design to the user. We are doing the opposite now.
  2. The title of the list is the label itself. However, it is displayed as just a heading, and not styled as the label. Again this is confusing. We don't want the user to think that the list title can possibly be separate from the label backing it in the system. (The color at the top of the list is pretty. But doesn't help and actually adds confusion.) Furthermore, this current design doesn't as strongly reinforce the fact that Backlog and Done are two special lists that are not backed by labels.
  3. Suppose we do change the list title to be styled as a label. That can also be confusing because an issue may contain two or more labels from multiple lists. However this is a secondary concern and not in the primary use case of boards. Boards are designed so that issues move between lists and the labels are implied to be used mutually exclusively.

Design

  • The list title will be displayed as the label style we are using in the search box. So the list title indicates that it's from a label but it won't be expected to be clickable.
  • Adding the label of the list back to the issue cards. For example, in the UX label list, UX label will be visible as other labels in the card. It should not be hidden.
