Stop populating templates into newly created repos
By default, git-init and git-clone will copy templates found in the template directory into the newly created repositories. The default set of templates is in no way big, it only amounts to around 76kB of data. But in total, this starts to add up. Using the number of projects in 2016, which is 564.000, leads to 42GB of needlessly wasted space on disk.
We should fix this and stop populating templates into newyl created repos. This can be easily done via git init --template=''
or git clone --template=''
.
