Compile list of user experience friction
Overview
Let's use this issue to compile a list of improvements to the Git user experience. The following projects and posts can provide clues as to what users do not like about using Git.
The examples here are from other sources, not from our own internal beliefs. The goal here is to get a feel for community sentiment around Git user experience.
User Friction Examples
Git is too hard
- One main theme of this thread seems to come from people who don't use branching correctly. There's a lot of talk of stashing and how you need to stash in order to pull. This means that they mainly work off of a busy
masterbranch.
Jujutsu: A Git-compatible DVCS that is both simple and powerful
- people don't like the index and find it confusing.
The world after Git is jj
- users like how you can squash your working copy into the previous commit with one command.
Stacked diffs/branchless workflows
Gitless
https://gitless.com/ which aims to solve the UI problems in Git as detailed in https://spderosso.github.io/onward13.pdf

Better experience with sparse checkout

The interesting thing here is that the hackernews post does not mention sparse checkout at all.
