Create a self-service Hackathon Kit for 3rd parties
Problem
Students and event organisers reach out to request us to run a GitLab Hackathon with them. We don't have the resources to support all these individual requests, and declining the request is disappointing for them (specially if they are GitLab advocates) and leads them to find an alternative (including competitors).
Solution
Create a Hackathon Kit (flyer) for 3rd party event organizers to run their own GitLab Hackathon leveraging GitLab’s contributor resources and community infrastructure.
It would include:
- How to access and use the GitLab Contributors Platform
- How to use GitLab's tracking and leaderboard system (i.e. participants should set a specific organisation in their profile temporarily)
- Using the self-service onboarding as a requirement or part of the hackathon
- Where to find beginner-friendly or domain-specific issues for participants
- How to tap into GitLab's community channels to find mentors/coaches or support staff for their event
- How to engage with our team to request promotion of their event
- How to use the reward store to obtain prizes for the contributions
- How to leverage existing GitLab documentation and resources
We could also consider:
- Giving extra points for the winners
- Providing a swag kit for onsite events
Is the idea of a self-organised hackathon feasible?
