Reactivating GitLab Hackathon-in-a-box

Hackathon-in-a-box is something that has been living in the Code Contributor handbook but I couldn't find any data on how many times it was run and its outcome.

However, with the goal of 1000 contributors per month, and increasing participation and events among Heroes, it's an idea that can contribute to both.

  • Primary goal: Reactivate GitLab Hackathon-in-a-box
  • Secondary goal: Train Heroes for facilitating GitLab Hackathon-in-a-box in their local community

Reactivate GitLab Hackathon-in-a-box

Hackathon-in-a-box facilitator toolkit

  • Code of conduct
  • Finalize an agenda template (existing resources)
    • Event's agenda
    • How to contribute (can be generic or specific to a contribution area)
    • Support during the event
      • Discord, Gitter
  • Logistics

Train Heroes for facilitating GitLab Hackathon-in-a-box in their local community

A potential opportunity to do that is during GitLab Commit in London, where @johncoghlan and @jrachel1 explore the idea of a Heroes summit. A facilitator workshop will allow us to transfer all the necessary knowledge and skills needed to heroes for organizing a local Hackathon-in-a-box.

This workshop can also be adjusted for our resident contributors (cc @epetoskey).

Structure

  • Format: Interactive workshop
    • Part one: Presentation
    • Part two: Drafting individual plans for running the events
    • Part three (online): Collaborating on a remote synchronous Hackathon-in-a-box event
  • Duration: 2 hours
  • Facilitators: 2
  • Goal: Provide participants with all the necessary resources and skills for running a hackathon-in-a-box
  • Contents:
    • What is Hackathon-in-a-box
      • Logistics (duration, expected outcome etc)
    • What are the skills needed for running one
    • How to run an inclusive event
    • How to get help during the event
