Slow bindfs?

I am using the vagrant VM with slight changes in size and CPU in our production environment. I've noticed that when I start the gitlab service, a bindfs process starts and takes about 5 minutes on close to 100% CPU to complete. Only after this process has been completed github is really up and running otherwise I get an nginx error.

Also when browsing through the app, the process pop up from time to time in top.

Is it safe to use the NFS mount directly, what's the purpose of the bindfs synced folder? I found nothing in the docs, beside the installation of the plugin.
