This issue is designed to help you get up and running as a GitLab contributor. One of the maintainers in the @gitlab-community/maintainers group will review your community forks access request and be available to help you with any onboarding questions.

Get started

• Request access to the community forks
  • A maintainer will reach out if they need more information to approve the access request
  • Once your access is approved this issue label will be updated to access-requestapproved
• Join the community Discord and say hello in the #contribute channel
• Try using GitLab Duo, our AI-powered features including Code Suggestions, Chat, Root Cause Analysis and more
  • Once your access is approved you will automatically receive a GitLab Duo Enterprise license and welcome email

• Follow the newly revamped Tutorial: Make a GitLab Contribution
• Recommended: Hop on a community pairing session to see what others are working on or to find help

Find an issue

• Find an issue to work on by using our first-time contributor issues or by finding a quick win

• Add a comment to the issue to let others know you would like to work on it
• Follow the issue's implementation plan to start making your merge request

Make your first contribution

• Choose your development environment and make your code changes
• Open a merge request using a community fork
• Complete the review process and merge your first contribution!

• Request your GitLab swag for merging your first contribution
• Find yourself on the GitLab contributor leaderboard
• Join a GitLab Hackathon
• Make your next contribution and earn more points
  • Select another quick win issue and consider trying a different area from above (documentation, frontend, backend)
  • Create your own issue to propose a feature/fix to improve GitLab
