Getting started with Git is unclear, especially for PC users
I just attempted and failed to guide a co-worker through the process of working with git / GitLab locally. My own set up is with a mac, where the terminal is easy to find, and following the steps on https://about.gitlab.com/handbook/#starting-with-git were fairly straightforward (although I installed Atom, not Sublime).
This process needs more info.
Specifically:
Start using GitLab
1. Follow the step-by-step guides on the [basics of working with Git and GitLab.](http://doc.gitlab.com/ce/gitlab-basics/README.html)
2. You will need to create your SSH Keys.
Install Git
1. Open a terminal.
2. Check your Git version by executing: git --version.
3. If Git is not installed, you should be prompted to install it.
==> the order should be reversed, I think. This is because the link to the basics of working with Git and GitLab go straight to working with the command line, but that is not introduced as a "thing" until the "Install Git" part of the instructions. There are links here to installing GitBash (for windows), but the download recommended there includes more than just Bash.
==> "Open a terminal", needs a link, or set of substeps. Also for PC.
==> "you should be prompted to install it"; this was not the case on the PC. Not sure if we were doing something wrong, or if the workflow is simply different there. In this case, after following http://doc.gitlab.com/ce/gitlab-basics/start-using-git.html, we downloaded git, and installed, but the command line failed to recognize the installation. Again, this may have been our user error. At this point, there is not much that can be done, so I referred the co-worker to a more knowledgeable team member.
Finally: why do we recommend Sublime only, and not open source solutions?
\cc @kirstenabma I believe you had some thoughts on how to organize this based on your own experience? Also \cc @balameb for more input on the process for PC's.
