Update Vacancy Description formatting
Vacancy descriptions are marketing materials. We should update all vacancy descriptions to have more inclusive and less biased language and structure. Writing a summary of the position in paragraph form can help create a more inclusive narrative about the role and attracts a more diverse pool of candidates. Using prose for the responsibilities, followed by a short list of concise requirements bullet points may improve the quality and diversity of applicants. I suggest we format all vacancies as follows:
Vacancy Job Title
Job Description + Responsibilities: 1-2 paragraphs that detail the responsibilities and expectations of the role. It could include team dynamic, typical tasks, project specifications, and desired experiences or factors for success. This section is best used to describe the position.
Requirements: List of 5-8 requirements (i.e)
- 4+ years of RoR experience in a production environment
- Prior work experience with a developer tools or ALM enterprise organization
- Open source contributions
- Excellent verbal and written English communication
- You share our values, and work in accordance with those values
I also suggest running all vacancy descriptions through http://gender-decoder.katmatfield.com/ to see potential area for bias improvement.
