FY'21 Q4 Development Engagement Survey Review and action items
This issue is to document any observations/ideas/actions from the Culture Amp FY'21 Q4 Engagement Survey that ran from 2020-11-15 through 2020-12-15.
The survey results for the Development Department are documented here:
Highlights
- Three highest-rated questions:
- I feel supported when I need to take time off or make use of flexible working arrangements.
- I feel I am able to take care of my family and friends first.
- Most people at GitLab make a good effort to collaborate with each other.
- The overall favorable score is 81% (in line with company-wide rating, and +8 above the New Tech benchmark)
- Questions in the “Your Manager” category were our most favorable (90% favorable, +2 above the company average)
- At the Senior Manager/Director level, almost all overall favorability percentages were above the New Tech benchmark with the exception of one group
Lowlights
- Three lowest-rated questions:
- I have seen positive changes since the previous engagement survey
- The Learning & Development programs provided by GitLab help grow my career
- I have been provided an opportunity to see and discuss prior engagement survey results
- Questions in the “Action” category were our least favorable (this was also consistent company-wide)
- Participation for Development went down (88% FY’21 vs. 92% FY’20)
- Company-wide participation rate went up (92% FY’21 vs. 87% FY’20)
- Engineering overall participation went down (89% FY’21 vs. 92% FY’20
- Results based on Gender were remarkably different (Female was lower than Male)
Proposed Actions
- FY'22 Q1: Performance Review Conversations and Career Development conversations.
- FY'22 Q1: R&D will have a Reverse AMA for Women. This is in response to the differences in response between team members who identify as Female and Male.
- FY'22 Q2: Based on Q1 Performance Review Conversations, review currently available training for each team member and map them to opportunities. If one doesn't exist, then explore outside training (either for group or individual). Please note these will be constrained by budget considerations. Consider leveraging our Growth and Development for academic study, professional coaching, Professional Development/Certifications/Licenses, self-service learning, etc. as eligible/applicable.
- FY'22 Q2: Based on results of the reverse AMA, Development will either follow an Engineering-wide initiative or consider its' own initiative.
- FY'22 Q3: We will review actions in October (assuming a November survey) with the team and results.
- FY'22 Q4: We will advertise participation more broadly so we have higher participation.
