[EMEA] - Informal trial: Seniors covering single day Support Manager on-call

EMEA region Informal Trial

Approach

We (EMEA managers) will be trying out having seniors cover Support Manager on-call on single days, during the week. It is voluntary for seniors to take part, not a requirement.

The reason for weekdays only, is to ensure there are other managers present to help if needed.

Benefit

The idea comes from seniors asking for more ways to acquire leadership experience at GitLab. Having experience handling Manager level escalations can be a good way to do that and add towards a future promotion, yearly talent assessment, or a thing to add on a resume.

With 4 managers in rotation we can also use the help.

What are the Support Manager on-call tasks

Handbook here

The default mindset when being manager on-call, is that we try to help everyone, if we can at all. If in doubt, reach out to a manager.

What can seniors not do

We sometimes have things requiring manager approval, or things that have a legal nature. These are not necessarily harder tasks to make a decision on / act on, but they need Manager approval. Please ping another manager at work on the day, for these.

Context: When Managers start at GitLab, we sign documents acknowledging that we act on behalf of GitLab and are aware that both GitLab and ourselves personally, can be held legally liable for our actions.

Who do I tell if I am interested / not interested in participating?
