Problem Statement
In short: I think it's time to bring (back) the Weekly Support Team Call to AMER
.
What is the problem and why is this a problem?
A lot of things have changed between fall 2021 (when the AMER weekly call went away) and spring 2024. Support Global Groups (SGGs) were launched in 2022, for example. I think we should try the weekly AMER Support Team Call again. If it becomes sparsely attended, we can make it less frequent or cancel altogether. Fun fact: the End of week hangout
call is the 'purely social' option added when the mostly work-focused AMER weekly call evolved back in fall 2021.
If you are not already convinced, I would encourage you to take a look through the agendas for the APAC and EMEA Support Team Calls. That will give you an idea of the kinds of conversations to be had.
- The return of the call helps with the feeling of silos that SGGs can create.
- The return of the call gives folks a synchronous place to raise topics that might not make sense to write down in a formalized issue (yet).
- The return of the call provides a place where folks can rapidly seek clarification/reduce confusion.
- I have observed with interest how the weekly calls seem to give Support folks in EMEA and in APAC a shared sense of what's going on in any given week.
Over the last few weeks (months... years...), it's been on my mind to propose the return of the weekly call in AMER. I hesitated on actually suggesting it because "Bias towards asynchronous communication rings loudly in my head". After observing how these calls are handled and discussed in EMEA and in APAC, I think that this is a place where it makes sense to have some synchronous communication. I will note that the bias towards asynchronous communication (in its entirety) is already built into the approach to these calls.
Proposal
Bring (back) the Weekly Support Team Call to AMER
and make use of the the meeting roles (chair and notetaker).

Potential Roadblocks/Things to consider
As with everything, this takes time. I expect that some folks will always prefer to look through the notes. I expect that some folks will only be able to attend sometimes.
The notes and the recordings should make it so that folks are always able to skip the meeting without losing too much context. The agenda should make it so that folks can raise a topic for conversation, even if they can't be present on the call.

- The team finds value in the call.

- The call is moderately well-attended
- Folks who do not attend the call reference the notes
- We recognize the call is not useful and do something else
