Workflow for Admin tasks for Support Promotions
Background
During a pairing session, @anton and I were considering some things that led us to discover firstly that the Support Senior Engineers Group exists but is very out of date! And that we don't have a process to keep this updated.
Thinking about this further, we concluded that we don't actually have any guidance anywhere on what tasks need to be completed by a team member in the support team when they are promoted. (Either that or we just can't find it!). @cynthia we figure if anyone knows if this exists already it would be you! Is it just us not finding it?!
There is a little bit of guidance for managers on how to announce when a person is promoted in the team.
Assuming guidance for the tasks a team member needs to complete doesn't exist:
Next steps
- Add MR to https://about.gitlab.com/handbook/support/managers/promoting-a-support-team-member.html#announcement
-
add guidance to announce promotion in SWIR in addition to Slack (unrelated to this discussion but I noticed the lack! I'll keep this as a seperate MR) -
add guidance to ask promoted team member to raise Promotion Issue in support training project (to be created - see next bullet item)
-
- Create issue template in Support Training (similar to the region relocation issue) to guide SE to do the following (some of this was derived from the Career Mobility issue template Particularly the profile section.):
- update job title in Support Team yaml
- update team page entry in the team yaml file. Instructions here in the handbook. Assign the Merge Request to your manager for merging. If your manager doesn't having merging rights, assign to the People Connect Team member assigned to this issue.
- manager to add you as owner in support senior engineers group.
- Update your Slack profile to include your new role
- Update your Gmail signature to include your new role. Here is an example you can use.
- Update your Zoom profile to include your new role.
- Join the #spt_seniors_plus slack channel (and/or other relevant channels depending on role you have been promoted to)
- Update your role title in your GitLab user profile
- Calendly - there isn't a job title field, however some people include their title in other fields
- Consider any public profiles you have elsewhere such as GitLab Forum, LinkedIn, StackOverflow...
