Support Crew: consider roster or schedule rotations

Problem

The fixed Crew schedule unevenly distributes the pros and cons of the different days of the week among the SEs. This includes things like which days tend to be busier, and which days tend to be more popular for vacations. The static Crew makeup (same people are always together) unevenly distributes expertise and, maybe more importantly, participation style and level. These two inequities are likely lowering our productivity and producing undesirable levels of frustration and dissatisfaction.

I believe there are also benefits to the current plan, including:

  • The members of each day's crew get to know each other, trust each other, and learn to work together well. This can be really rewarding. Admittedly this will only happen for the crews with high levels of member participation.
  • It's much easier on everyone to remember what their Crew day is if it doesn't change.
  • It's much easier on the schedule maintainer if the schedule doesn't change.
  • The current (AMER) rosters are designed to provide a decent balance of people each day who work the early AMER hours vs. the late AMER hours, and if the rosters are to rotate it could be challenging to maintain that balance.

Request

Lee to discuss the problem with other managers, SEs, etc., and to update the handbook with clear guidance.
